IN SEARCH OF THE MAN ON THE BIKE
On September 18, 1944, the second day of Operation Market Garden, the 491st Bombardment Group, U.S. 8th Air Force flew a low-level supply mission to Allied paratroops near Eindhoven, southern Holland. Their orders were to drop supplies at 250 ft. elevation, turn left, gain altitude to 6,000 ft., and head for home base in England. But, after turning for home the lead plane was hit by antiaircraft fire, crashed, and exploded. The rest of the squadron flew out of Holland between church steeples and between haystacks, even, at times “below dike level”. Approaching one such dike, one pilot spotted a man on a bicycle atop the dike directly in his path. Avoiding the cyclist was impossible, but at the last moment, the man on the bike threw himself to the ground as the plane’s propellers sliced the air above him.
In honor of that pilot, my uncle Col. Haynes M. Baumgardner, the 75th anniversary of Operation Market Garden, and the liberation of Holland, I am seeking “the man on the bike on the dike”, or anyone who knows his side of the story. Please notify me if you have ever heard this story from the cyclist’s perspective.
