DUTCH OPEN AIR MUSEUM: EMIGRANTS AND MEMORABILIA
Museum is looking for Dutch emigrants with cherished Dutch items. The Netherlands Open Air Museum (NOM) in Arnhem is preparing its new annual theme. From the end of March 2009, the NOM will be in the spirit of emigration and internal migration.
Large groups of Dutch people emigrated in the 19th and 20th centuries; they went mainly to the United States, but Canada was also a very popular destination around 1950. In preparation for an exhibition we are looking for stories from Dutch emigrants, especially with regard to the objects they took with them on their journey across the world. Which cherished items did the emigrants take with them to foreign countries and what did they mean to them? Was grandpaís old clock closely connected with Holland? Were the nostalgic kitchen tins with typical Dutch scenes a medicine for homesickness?
We would like to get in contact with Dutch emigrants and capture the memories and emotions that the objects might have conjured up. We are also very interested in photos of Dutch emigrants with their cherished belongings.
If you are interested in taking part, please send an email to Charlotte Champion, C.Champion@openluchtmuseum.nl.
